Porthcawl Carnival 2010
The Porthcawl Carnival dates back to 1957 and was admirably organised by Porthcawl Round Table up until the mid 1990’s. Many former members of Porthcawl Round Table are still around the town!! You will see them on the field running the tombola stall and they now go under the banner of 41 Club. Their dear lady wives ‘Porthcawl Tangent Club’ have been stalwart attendees supplying the afternoon tea for our guests and dignitaries.
The current committee called Porthcawl Buckaneers are a small group of volunteers who now organise this event in a tide of changing legal and policy rules for such events.
This year has been no exception with a change in policy by South Wales Police regarding the policing of the event. We were informed about the change in policy on the 3rd of June 2010 and the implications and financial costs were substantial. However, we persevered and with excellent community partnership working with the Highways Department, Ian David and Keith Power of BCBC and Police Sergeant Mike Davies,Porthcawl a resolution was agreed but there was still a financial implication that had to be addressed. This is were we as a committee are extremely appreciative of the instant action by Porthcawl Community Council. Porthcawl Chamber of Trade and Porthcawl Rugby Club who have stepped in to assist us. We may complain about local politicians but we agree that they receive very little reward and this is an occasion when the community must applaude them for their assistance. In the last year on other issues in the town we’ve seen a positive approach by the Community Council in assisting community projects achieve potential.
Well done Porthcawl Community Council.
A new award sponsored by Lindsay Morgan President of Porthcawl Chamber of Trade was made to the 'gambo' entered by the Blue Seas Guest House. As a committee we intend to have the 'gambo' as another part of the annual carnival and anyone interested to contact the Porthcawl Buckaneers.
The committee would like to thank the road hauliers for the supply of the lorries. Mills Scaffolding who help every year and I understand he is returning from holiday on Friday to help!!!!! Everyone who donated in our buckets over the last week. Our thanks goes out to the business community who advertise in our Carnival magazine. We are extremely grateful to the 'volunteers' who assisted us in our collections and the erection of tents etc on the carnival field.
